Just like any respectable Central Arkansas fella, I’ve got a strong love for the pursuit of waterfowl, but for the last five years, it’s been more than that for me. Hunting has become my identity, drive, and motivation that gets me up and moving daily.

Ernest Hemingway once wrote, “There is no hunting like the hunting of man, and those who have hunted armed men long enough and liked it, never care for anything else thereafter.” I can't entirely agree with that. I spent nearly ten years of my life hunting terrorists as an intelligence analyst with Navy SEAL teams. I experienced that form of hunting through three combat deployments across Africa and Afghanistan. I thought that hunting would define me for the rest of my life. While it did mold and shape me into the hunter I am today, I say, “To hell with armed men; give me some greenheads.” I think Mr. Hemingway just missed out on finding the right pursuit.

This passion is why I’m so dedicated to SABO. I aim to enable outdoor adventures for everyone, lowering the barrier to entry for folks who couldn’t otherwise afford a private land hunt or find a place to lease. There will still be guided opportunities, too. Those who can afford them should support local small businesses with strong reputations. But I’m a DIY kind of guy, so the DIY private land hunts suit me better. By offering accessible and affordable options, SABO can open up the hunting world to a broader audience, ensuring that everyone, regardless of financial status, can experience the thrill and joy of the hunt. Our platform aims to connect hunters with available lands, providing detailed maps, regulations, and tips to make each hunting trip successful and enjoyable.

Hunting is more than a sport; it’s a way to connect with nature, challenge oneself, and find peace in the great outdoors. It’s about the thrill of the chase, the patience required, and the satisfaction of success. For me, it’s also about passing on these traditions and opportunities to others. Whether you’re a seasoned hunter or just starting, there’s something profoundly rewarding about the hunt. Through SABO, I hope to share this experience with as many people as possible, ensuring that everyone can embrace the wild and find their place in it. By creating a community of hunters who share their experiences, tips, and support, we can foster a sense of camaraderie and respect for nature. This not only enhances the hunting experience but also promotes conservation and responsible wildlife management. Through educational resources and community engagement, SABO is committed to nurturing the next generation of hunters, instilling in them a love for the outdoors and a respect for the environment.

The Barriers to Entry for Hunting Private Land: High Costs and Liability Concerns

Being raised in state. However, for many of us, accessing private land for hunting can be a significant challenge due to a couple of major barriers: high costs and liability concerns for landowners.

High Costs: A Major Hurdle

One of the most significant barriers to hunting on private land is the cost. Leasing private land for hunting can be prohibitively expensive. According to the Quality Deer Management Association, hunting lease rates in prime locations can be up to $10,000 per acre annually, depending on the quality of the game and the land's location. For an average-sized lease, this can easily add up to over a hundred grand per year, far too steep of a price for the typical outdoorsman.

On top of that, there’s usually upfront costs associated with securing a lease, like legal fees for drafting agreements and potential improvements or maintenance of the land to make it suitable for hunting. These expenses can deter many hunters who might otherwise be interested in leasing private land.

Liability Concerns for Landowners

On the flip side, landowners face their own set of challenges when considering whether to lease their property for hunting. One of the primary concerns is liability. Landowners worry about the potential legal repercussions if a hunter were to get injured on their property. Despite the existence of liability insurance and state laws designed to protect landowners, such as Arkansas’s Recreational Use Statute, which limits the liability of landowners who allow the public to use their land for recreational purposes, the fear of lawsuits still looms large.

To mitigate these risks, landowners often require hunters to carry liability insurance or include indemnity clauses in their leases, which can complicate and increase the cost of securing a hunting lease. These added complexities can discourage landowners from opening their lands to hunters, thereby limiting the availability of private hunting grounds.

Navigating the Barriers

Despite these challenges, there are ways to navigate the barriers to hunting on private land. Forming hunting clubs or cooperatives can help distribute the costs among several members, making leases more affordable. Additionally, building strong relationships with landowners and demonstrating responsible hunting practices can help alleviate some of their liability concerns.

Technology is also playing a role in making private land more accessible. Platforms like SABO Outdoors are designed to connect hunters with landowners, providing a streamlined process for securing hunting leases and addressing liability concerns through standardized agreements and insurance solutions.

Conclusion

Hunting private land in Arkansas, and indeed across the country, presents significant barriers due to high costs and liability concerns for landowners. However, with cooperative efforts and the aid of modern technology, these obstacles can be overcome, allowing more hunters to enjoy the rich tradition of hunting on private land.

For those of us passionate about hunting, it's worth exploring these avenues and working together to make private land hunting more accessible and sustainable for future generations.

SABO Outdoors: Pioneering Adventure and Conservation

How and why Justin and I started SABO accessible while promoting conservation. Founded by Justin Neal and me, we wanted to create a platform that bridges the gap between outdoor enthusiasts and private landowners.

The Genesis of SABO Outdoors

Justin and I, both avid outdoorsmen, often found ourselves frustrated by the limited access to quality hunting and fishing grounds. Public lands were crowded, and private lands were often out of reach. We saw an opportunity to create a solution that benefits both landowners and adventurers. Thus, SABO Outdoors was born.

Our Mission

SABO Outdoors is dedicated to providing a seamless and responsible way for people to experience nature. We connect outdoor enthusiasts with private landowners who are willing to share their land for activities such as hunting, fishing, camping, and more. Our platform ensures that these experiences are safe, enjoyable, and sustainable.

Why We Created SABO Outdoors

Accessibility: We wanted to make it easier for people to find and access private lands for outdoor activities. By creating a marketplace that connects landowners with adventurers, we open up new possibilities for exploration and enjoyment.

Conservation: We believe in responsible land use and conservation. Our platform encourages ethical outdoor practices and helps landowners generate income that can be reinvested into land management and conservation efforts.

Community: At the heart of SABO Outdoors is a vibrant community of like-minded individuals who share a love for nature. We aim to foster connections, share knowledge, and build a supportive network of outdoor enthusiasts.

How It Works

SABO Outdoors offers an easy-to-use platform where landowners can list their properties and specify the types of activities allowed. Outdoor enthusiasts can browse these listings, book their adventures, and enjoy exclusive access to prime outdoor locations. Our system ensures transparency, security, and convenience for both parties.

Looking Ahead

We envision SABO Outdoors as more than just a platform; we see it as a movement towards greater appreciation and stewardship of our natural resources. With each booking, we are helping to create a future where outdoor adventures are accessible, enjoyable, and sustainable for everyone.

Join us on this exciting journey and become part of the SABO Outdoors community. Whether you’re a landowner looking to share your slice of paradise or an adventurer seeking your next great experience, SABO Outdoors is here to connect you with the outdoors like never before.

For more information and to start your adventure, visit SABO Outdoors.
